John de Reuck, Acting Principal, Perth campus
Having spent over a year studying in the German city of Goettingen, John de Reuck understands the challenges students face in a foreign country.
“It takes a lot of courage and students need to be prepared to call on the support of their carers and teachers”
Having studied in the place that produced such literary greats as the Brothers Grimm, Wilhelm Weber and Georg Gervinus, it is not surprising that John’s passions include literature and philosophy. Philosophy isn’t normally the most popular subject choice but if John has anything to do with it that will soon change.
“A returning student of mine told me that he had been selected for a management training course by a large oil firm. He said he passed successfully purely on the knowledge he had gained from the applied logic course he had done at Taylors College. So Philosophy, as I always knew, even helps in the business world.”
John’s experience working for large organizations and universities helped him perfect a methodology for decision management and leadership that he uses in his teaching.
He has helped set up a new semester unit for the University of Western Australia Foundation Program called “Philosophy and Ethics: Structured Reasoning, Strategic Communication and Decision Management”.
“We focus on developing high level cognitive skills which will equip our students for success in their university studies and in their future careers.”
John is unashamedly biased about Perth and Taylors College. He lists his students and the Perth environment as what he loves the most about his job.
“In my view, Perth simply has the finest college and best setting of all of Taylors.” And as for living in Perth, he adds “Sailing on the Perth estuary, especially at night, there’s no better way to spend an evening”.
