Q: Is this a three year program, meaning that students must finish Year 9 equivalent in their home country to enter?
A: Yes. They must achieve high scores in Year 9 to be accepted into the Year 10 VCE Scholars’ program (minimum B+ general, minimum A in Mathematics and Science).
Q: Where can applicants take the Mathematics test?
A: At our Regional Offices, trusted agents or through our online Student Enrolment Advisors
Q: Can a student begin in year 11 of the Scholars program?
A: No, the program starts only in Year 10, and only in the January intake. Certain Year 11 subjects need to be completed in Year 10 so the student has time in Year 11 to study some Year 12 subjects. This enables the student to undertake the University Enhancement Program in Year 12.
Q: Does this mean there is an overload during Year 10?
A: No, the student studies the same number of subjects per day as a regular Year 10 student, however the study is at a higher academic level (Year 11 equivalent). Then students are then equipped to take 2 Year 12 subjects during Year 11.
Q: How many Year 12 subjects are studied in Year 12?
A: The student takes 4 VCE subjects in Year 12 - Mathematics, Sciences and English. Depending on the student’s academic record at the end of VCE Scholars’ Year 11, the University of Melbourne would invite them to undertake one or two university subjects in Year 12. These subjects plus the VCE subjects comprise the student’s total Year 12 workload.
Q: When do Scholars’ Program students sit the VCE exams?
A: Students take exams for Year 12 subjects taken during year 11 at the end of Year 11. At the end of Year 12, students are examined on the Year 12 studies completed during that year. The University extension units are examined during the year by the University.
Q: So the student completes the full VCE program? When do they know their ENTER?
A:The student completes the full VCE course. They will know their ENTER following the release of the VCE results, which occurs around the middle of December after Year 12.
Q: How does the student increase their ENTER for university?
A:Students who study 6 subjects instead of the normal 5 are awarded 10% of their 5th and 6th subjects. University enhancement subjects are eligible for this bonus.
Students may also be eligible for an increment of 4.0, 5.0 or 5.5 points added to their ENTER aggregate before calculation of their final ENTER. More information about the University of Melbourne’s process here:

Q: Year 12 University extension program is offered by University of Melbourne. Does this mean that the credits will be transferred to this University?
A: The university enhancement subjects from the University of Melbourne is accepted by almost all universities in Australia, so students can apply for credit recognition to any of those universities (including Melbourne).
Q: Are students in this program guaranteed entry into the University of Melbourne upon graduation?
A: No, students would still apply in the same way as the normal Year 12 students BUT
Q: How do students apply to university after the program?
VCE Scholars would apply to university through the normal process.
Q: How does the student apply for credit recognition for their University Enhancement subjects?
This is done when the student enrols at the university at the start of their first year.
Q: What mark is required for the university enhancement subjects in order to have credits transferred to the University?
A: The universities have not released this information yet. Please consult the universities for details. More information about the University of Melbourne’s enhancement program is here: www.services.unimelb.edu.au/umep/futurestudents/whatis/index.html
Q: What happens to students who do not pass the Scholars’ program?
A: Those students who do not meet the requirements at the end of Year 10 and Year 11 for the VCE scholars’ program will be invited to join the mainstream VCE program. Any request to move to a foundation program after completing Year 11 will be influenced by visa and DIAC requirements (IELTS, Country level etc).
Q: Can a student move from the Scholars’ program to VCE program in the middle of the year (e.g: mid of year 10 or 11 to the normal VCE program).
A: Students who fail to achieve the required grades at the end of Year 10 or 11 will be moved into the regular VCE classes. Students who wish to move into the regular VCE program (as their own decision) may apply to do so at the end of any semester in Year 10 or 11.
Q: Is there a fee for the University Extension Program?
A: There is a fee of AU$440 for the Mathematics Extension Program. The remainder TBA
Q: How does the $6000 scholarship work?
A: All students who are admitted into the Year 12 VCE Scholars’ Program after having successfully achieved the Year 10 and 11 benchmarks are eligible for a $6,000 scholarship towards their Year 12 tuition fees. The scholarship amount will be deducted from the student’s final Year 12 fee payment.
Q: Is the Year 12 University Enhancement Program similar to a foundation program?
A: No, it is completely different. The university enhancement program is a opportunity for very high achieving students to begin their first year university subjects whilst still in Year 12. A foundation program is always a pre-university program. VCE Scholars who complete the university enhancement program have already started their university study for those subjects, so they are ahead of students who only have completed regular VCE or a foundation program.
